Shèkèrè by Tam Fiofori

Shèkèrè is a 360 degrees media and interactive platform that seeks to interpret the story of Africa by Africans.  According to the great writer, Chinua Achebe,

“We have to begin the “process of “re-storying” Peoples, who had been knocked silent by all kinds of dispossession.”

Most of what so-called educated Africans know about Africa is not what they have been told by Africans, but what foreigners have interpreted to be African history. This leads to a lot of misunderstanding and misinterpretation. Shèkèrè hopes to foment discussions about Africa’’s real history and promote the scientific and systematic study; preservation and promotion of this history. We at Shèkèrè, believe that without knowing our past, we cannot understand our present and hence cannot build a future. Myths about Africa continue to confuse and obfuscate the real Africa.

Africa is not only about slavery and colonialism. It’s much more than that. It is about science, about philosophy, about the sophistication of the ideas and ideals of our ancestors; it is about life lived in full and in verse, it is about human frailty and human genius, it is about poetry, beauty, dance and music. The journey to discover the true Africa is a fascinating adventure into a kaleidoscope of experiences. In the past 100 years, the picture even Africans themselves have of Africa is a distorted one. It is the patchwork memory of a people struggling to make sense out of  the calamities that arrived on their shores and turned their world upside down.

We have to tell our stories anew, through our own eyes and our own prisms, through context and content reframing. This is what Shèkèrè is about.
